The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Bubbleback reference 3131 represents one of the most
historically significant chapters in Rolex development — among the brand’s earliest
fully functional automatic timepieces and one of the very first watches to combine
the patented Oyster waterproof case with the Perpetual self-winding rotor that would
define the modern Rolex. Produced through the WWII era, the 3131 wears its caliber
on its sleeve quite literally: the domed screw-down caseback that earned the model
its Bubbleback nickname was engineered specifically to house the Perpetual rotor
mechanism, giving the watch its instantly recognizable silhouette. This example
is cased in warm rose gold, a material Rolex used extensively during the 1930s and
1940s before the rose alloy fell from favor in postwar dress watches. The compact
case proportions wear elegantly on the wrist and reflect the period when the wristwatch
was still transitioning from pocket-watch derivative to dedicated wrist instrument.
The dial carries applied hour markers and slim hands in a classic deco arrangement,
with the seconds typically displayed in a small subsidiary register at six o’clock.
Powered by an early Rolex Perpetual rotor automatic movement, a movement architecture
that established the technical foundation Rolex still builds upon today. 1941 production,
pre-owned in vintage condition befitting its age and provenance.
