The Rolex Submariner Date 16800 represents one of the most important transitional
references in modern Submariner history. Produced from 1979 to 1989, the 16800 was
the first Submariner to be fitted with a sapphire crystal in place of the prior
acrylic, the first Submariner rated to 300 meters of water resistance, and the bridge
between the vintage and modern eras of Rolex’s defining dive watch. This 1986 example
sits squarely in the middle of that production window, featuring the glossy black
dial with applied tritium hour markers that have aged to a warm champagne patina—
the distinct visual signature collectors look for in this era of Submariner. The
40mm stainless steel Oyster case is paired with the unidirectional rotating aluminum
bezel insert that defined the Submariner aesthetic before ceramic Cerachrom arrived
in the 2010s. Powered by the Rolex Caliber 3035 self-winding movement, a chronometer-
certified caliber with a quickset date function and 42-hour power reserve, the 16800
delivered the technical refinements that would carry the Submariner forward for
the next four decades. Mercedes hands, cyclops-magnified date at 3 o’clock, and
the Oyster bracelet complete the package. Pre-owned, 1986 production, an honest
transitional-era Submariner.
