The Reference

Examined to the movement.

The Rolex GMT-Master II 16710 "Coke" is the discontinued steel GMT-Master II that defined the model from 1989 through 2007 — and the last GMT-Master II ever produced with the classic aluminum bezel insert before the ceramic Cerachrom era arrived with the 116710LN in 2007. The Coke nickname references the red-and-black bezel configuration that this reference was famously available in (alongside the Pepsi red-and-blue and the all-black variants), and across nearly two decades of production the 16710 became the GMT-Master II of choice for pilots, airline crews, and frequent travelers who needed to track a second time zone in a robust steel case. The 40mm Oystersteel Oyster case is paired with the bidirectional rotating black-and-red aluminum bezel insert that gives the Coke its identity, and the matching Oyster bracelet with Fliplock extension. The glossy black dial features applied luminous hour markers (tritium in earlier production transitioning to Super-LumiNova around 2000), Mercedes hands, the central 24-hour GMT hand for tracking a second time zone, and the cyclops-magnified date at 3 o'clock. Powered by the in-house Rolex Caliber 3185 in early production and the upgraded Caliber 3186 with blue Parachrom hairspring in later years, the 16710 beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour with a 48-hour power reserve and Superlative Chronometer certification. Sapphire crystal, 100 meters water resistance. Pre-owned.
